From advanced fiber optics to state-of-the-art water treatment plants, utilities in the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton area have invested in the latest technology to ensure residents have the services they need to create a safe, comfortable and healthful living and working environment.

Now more than ever, wireless communications have become as indispensable in our lives as electricity and running water. Hargray Communications has stayed at the forefront of fiber optic technology to provide its 80,000-plus customers with the highest quality internet, TV and phone services.

Hargray is an industry leader providing a pure fiber-based wide area network (WAN) to cellular towers throughout the region. In 2015, it upgraded its network to become the first provider to deliver Gig speeds on Hilton Head Island and in Bluffton.

Today, Hargray offers internet download speeds of up to 1,000 Mbps, Wi-Fi with multiple access points for full, seamless coverage in any size home or business, digital cable TV featuring more than 250 channels, and home phone service with digital messaging features.

Power on the island and portions of Bluffton is provided by Palmetto Electric Cooperative, a customer-owned utility. Dominion Energy also services the mainland.

Four water utilities – Hilton Head Public Service District, Broad Creek Public Service District, South Island Public Service District and Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority – supply area residents with high-quality drinking water obtained from a combination of sources, including reverse osmosis treatment plants, Floridan Aquifer wells and treated surface water from the Savannah River. All of the water on the island and in Bluffton meets federal and state requirements for safe drinking water, and all of the agencies have earned awards for safety and conservation.
