About the Project
Hilton Head Island will begin a major beach renourishment project in the summer of 2025 to maintain and protect its cherished shoreline.
This effort will restore approximately 2.2 million cubic yards of sand across 46,500 feet of coastline, including stretches along the Atlantic Ocean and Port Royal Sound. The project will be funded largely through tourism revenue generated by the local Beach Preservation Fee.
Areas of Focus
The renourishment will target five key areas:
- South Beach / South Island: Adding 750,000 cubic yards of sand over 10,230 feet.
- Central Island: Placing 700,000 cubic yards of sand along 28,860 feet.
- The Heel: Replenishing 500,000 cubic yards over 5,280 feet at the island's northeastern tip.
- Fish Haul Creek: Restoring 50,000 cubic yards across 2,130 feet.
- Pine Island: Adding 180,000 cubic yards of sand and installing six rock breakwaters near Dolphin Head.
Timeline
- Phase 1 - The Heel, Port Royal, Fish Haul and Pine Island - (June 2025 - October 2025)
- Phase 2 - Central Island, South Island, and South Beach - (September 2025 - May 2026)
- Phase 3 - Pine Island Structures - (TBD)
How It Will Work
The sand will be sourced from offshore locations and transported to the beaches through pipelines. Once there, heavy equipment will shape and smooth the sand to match the design plan. Construction will run 24/7 for approximately six months.
Why It Matters
This renourishment initiative is essential for:
- Environmental Conservation: Preserving habitats for sea turtles, seabirds, and other wildlife.
- Coastal Protection: Strengthening defenses against storm damage for oceanfront properties.
- Recreation and Tourism: Keeping the beaches wide and accessible for public use.
